Anathema is one two most influential bands of my childhood. It singlehandedly took from the claws of hip-hop and made me interested in music. Unfortunately, today band members suffer psychological and monetary struggles - you can help them out via a [fundraiser](https://www.gofundme.com/f/weather-systems-fundraiser-keep-the-music-alive).

As a teen, I spent countless hours on trains with a portable audio player armed with Alternative 4. I still consider it their greatest album, and it is still one of my favorites.

---
Any git repository has a hidden `.git` folder. If you open it, all internals of Git are at your disposal. Today, something I should have learned a long time ago: objects.

First: a commit is an object. You can see it via `git cat-file -p <SHA of commit>`. The first two lines of the output will look like this:
```
tree b4653c20c7486d8b9e4eb10a882b79a3a9f3cfdf
parent 5eb01813d3e6b1f2ac1c7f432d5d994a7fee9ec1
```

The parent is the SHA of the parent's commit, but that's unimportant today. Instead, let's focus on the tree. You can check what's inside using the same `git cat-file -p <SHA>`, and you will see a listing of the top-level folder in the git repository. You can also `cat-file` any of those. There are two types of objects in Git:

- tree - a tree of other objects
- blob - a file (compressed)

What does it mean? A commit is a reference to the state of the entire repository at a given moment in time. The state consists of entire files (blobs) and references to other nodes in the trees (directories). Neat.

This is why you don't want to store big binary files in git, as each version is a copy of the file. Not very space-effective.

You can see each of those objects in `.git/objects`, but since they are compressed, it's much easier to use `git cat-file`. Note that blob objects don't have any filename attached - just the content. Instead, the filename is taken from a tree object. This is a benefit: the blob object will be reused when you have the same file under multiple names.

abstract: I finished GTA V but felt nothing, despite it being a great game

year: 2023
draft: false
tags:

---
I finished playing GTA V a few days ago. The game is a technical marvel. I played it on a PlayStation 4, so there was at least one remake since the game I saw, but I was often amazed.

I was amazed by the graphics. Everything looks simply amazing.

I was amazed by all the details they've put in. I have no idea how they want to top it in GTA VI.

I was amazed by the variety of missions. As someone who still remembers playing (and never finishing) GTA 1, the variety was big enough for the amazement but small enough not to be exhausting.

It's also the first GTA I've finished. GTA 1 and 2 were simply annoying. GTA 3 and Vice City each reached a point where too many characters tried to kill me, and I gave up. I almost finished San Andreas, but the last mission on the keyboard was unplayable. Not enough fingers, I guess. I have never played GTAIV. GTA V is the first GTA which actively want me to finish it. The aimbot was generous, and I was able to bypass all flying missions.

This game is very close to perfection.

Yet I left feeling unimpressed. The game looked real enough to notice just how little there was. When I saw a building in Vice City, it was rudimentary, and I filled all the voids in my head. In the fifth, I knew most skyscrapers were hollow, and I felt no need to explore their surroundings. It was just too close for my imagination to kick in.

The story was also a downgrade from San Andreas in scope. When CJ had a huge adventure spanning multiple cities, it all fell much smaller here - not only in sheer size but also in what I experienced. The best moment of GTA, which I will remember for a long time, is the small chapter outside the main map. It's tiny, linear, and snowy. Yet, it was a much-needed break from the California vibe.

Speaking of California, the city is disgusting. Roads, roads everywhere, and getting anywhere by foot it's a chore. I was told that Los Santos resembled Los Angeles in this matter, and I don't want to set foot there ever.

For me, GTAV is in a sad place where it's great enough that any shortcomings (which were not numerous) are much more visible. For example, I would not notice how empty the city is if it was uglier.

But the biggest problem is the lack of definitive closure. I should feel like I accomplished a goal when I finish a game. Here, developers put so much random stuff that I could continue playing for years and not witness everything. But I ignore such content and always focus on the main story. I wait for the final movie to wrap up, for the credits to roll, and for me to be thrown back to the main menu. "Ok, I am done" is the feeling I want. Unfortunately, GTAV (and most likely other open-world games) never give me that. Credits roll, and I am back in the game world—a world where all my actions don't matter. I can continue to do random stuff as if nothing happened. All that changed is that the number of mission markers decreased.

And the last thing I noticed. This is the most realistic setting for a GTA I've witnessed. It feels real. And this made it very uncomfortable to simply treat the world as a sandbox. Killing pedestrians seems too real, and starting a mini-war with the police seemed wrong. In the 3rd, getting all weapons via cheat codes and just shooting everything was the best to play it. It's a different game now.

> What the greatest of literature and greatest of art does is resonate back with yourself. And you know, a side-scrolling shooter where you're just endlessly blowing up identical spacecraft is not going to do that. But text adventures give us the possibility that a story could have meaningful consequences both internally and for the reader, the player, in a way that had never been seen before.
> (Get Lamp)

Gaming has matured, and the above quote may no longer apply. We now see shooters with amazing storylines. But we are also plagued with multiplayer, where T-Bagging is more important than telling a story, so there's also a Doom to your Sam & Max.

Interactive fiction is not so prevalent today (to the surprise of none), but it is still going strong. You can find hundreds of titles on [IFDB](https://ifdb.org/).

I can recommend [Counterfeit Monkey](https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=aearuuxv83plclpl), the highest-rated game there.

> Text is lost because people just expect computer games to have graphics, and if you want to play a game that doesn't have graphics, then you have to give them a very good reason not to.

idea from [Ruben Schade](https://rubenerd.com/tag/music-monday/).*

To say that [John Coltrane](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Coltrane) was a successful jazzman would be a colossal understatement. He played with [Miles Davis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Davis) during the "[Kind of Blue](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kind_of_Blue)" era. He was on top.

And then he was not. Due to narcotics and alcohol, Miles removes him from his band. John didn't give up but instead pulled himself together and became the arguably best jazzman of all time. This is his first recording after the departure from [Miles's Quintet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Davis_Quintet).

{{<youtube "KwIC6B_dvW4" "John Coltrane - Giant Steps">}}

And who replaced Coltrane? [Wayne Shorter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Shorter)! Another legend.

Now, there is an excellent movie on Youtube explaining exactly how great of achievement Giant Steps was.

{{<youtube "62tIvfP9A2w" "The most feared song in jazz, explained">}}

Ps. Today I learned that John Coltrane is considered a [saint](https://www.coltranechurch.org/), which is funny in a way. Coltrane was very spiritual, but calling him a Christian would be a mistake.

Those things haven't changed much since I used them frequently. I am sitting in HCP 111A railway wagon. It's as ugly and uncomfortable as 20 years ago. It's also magical. Trains are inherently awesome machines, even those barely working. Loud, huge, and in decline. Or at least I thought so, as the train is packed with passengers!

One thing which has changed is inter-passenger relations. I used to have temporary "uncles" in random grandpas riding in the same compartment with my family. We've chatted, and I've learned basic card games. Today people don't even say "hello" to you back. O tempora! O mores!

But enough about today. Let's get back to yesterday.

Yesterday my short [opinion piece](https://d-s.sh/2023/desktop-freebsd-wont-improve-unless-people-are-using-it/) reached Hacker News. I was hoping the day would come, and it came sooner than anticipated. All I needed to do was post to a few Reddits; the rest is history. Unluckily, my server died soon after, but not due to traffic (FreeBSD is a beast, after all!) but due to botched infra change on the Vultr side. This is a non-profit blog, but still, I was contacting support o 3 AM—the joys of cloud.

But, out of those 5k visitors, two did something amazing - email me. I don't have any comments here, as is the fashion on the cool part of the blogosphere these days. Comments were a cesspool of spam and hate. Email, on the other hand, is perfect for interpersonal connection. You have to expose yourself to email someone. It's much more personal than writing "First!". I love it, and I am thankful.

Funny how a random person's message can make your day.

I want to share one more scene from Kids on the Slope, this time the last one from the series. This one hits me extra hard each time I see it.
{{<youtube "3L5Fdyj7zGs" "Sakamichi no Apollon - Moanin'">}}

It's been quite a few years since they have seen each other. But look how they are still connected! Sentarō recognizes Kaoru's style the minute he hears it.

Kids on the Slope is one of my all-time favorite series, so I am biased. But this is one of the very few perfect scenes of any series.

A follow-up from [a post](2023/that-scene-from-kids-on-the-slope/) from a few days ago, this is another amazing scene showing even deeper what jazz is:

{{<youtube "f_W5KoPRWy0" "blowin the blues away~but not for me Kids on the Slope live scene">}}

> [...] feel free to go crazy once you get in the groove

This is precisely what [Ted Gaioa](http://www.tedgioia.com/thehistoryofjazz.html) wrote about jazz: it's profoundly visceral music. It can (and should, but I cannot) appreciate it on an intellectual level, but deep inside, it's a musical discussion between band members. Kaoru and Sentarō are already connected spiritually, and they don't need to exchange words to communicate and understand each other.

Funny side note: the second song they play, "But Not For Me," was written by George and Ira Gershwin, white fellas, and the version they perform is based on Chet Baker's interpretation - a white jazz legend.

I always liked listening to [jazz](https://d-s.sh/tags/jazz), but for a long time, it was nothing more than this - listening. I was never *into* music. I would call myself nothing more than a casual. Yes, I was listening to [Anathema](https://d-s.sh/tags/anathema/) or Tool a lot, but until recently, I was unable to tell who the band members were.

Jazz was the first genre I wanted to dig into a bit more. And it all started with Kids on the Slope. With this scene:

As you may already know, I am slowly moving from Vim to Emacs. I am that guy, "btw I use emacs." So far, it has been great. The editor is solid, and the ecosystem is impressive. I can handle email and IRC from Emacs! That's the stuff.

But old habits die hard. Since I want to use Emacs in most Emacs-y of ways, I won't use Vim key bindings. And this causes frustration. There are two conflicting ones that drive extra me crazy.

In Vim, as we all know, `k` goes a line down. In Emacs, that's `C-n` (where C stands for Control). However, my mind wants to use `k`, so every few minutes, I press `C-k`, which deletes the rest of the line (the equivalent of `D` in Vim).

This site exists due to two reasons.
First of all, I hate social media and what it has done to the internet.
Second, having a website is something I have always enjoyed as it is simply cool as ice.
<!--more-->
Everyone should have a website. Not a Facebook fan page, Instagram, or whatever is cool now but an actual website on the open internet. This is also why I didn't enjoy having a medium-based blog and never posted anything there or anywhere. I will repost some articles there, but owning my platform (ehhh, wording worthy of The Verge) is great. It's simply so much fun for me. It's like Vim or Arch - you don't do it to be more productive or for any practical reason but for the sheer joy of it. So, therefore, I can add "btw, I have a website" to by "btw" list.

This website is also simple. It's just HTML files generated via Hugo and uploaded using rsync. The previous version was a monster born from React and Next.js and running on Vercel. It is was a cool experiment, but I don't want to live in a world where we complicate the simplest things.

Here you go: this site exists for me to be a self-centered neckbeard.
